- A man after God’s own heart. (1Sam 13 : 14)
David is famous in his own right – the shepherd boy who ended up shepherding God’s people Israel, under whose guidance Israel’s borders reached their greatest extent and who brought the Nation peace and prosperity. He is also famous because of God’s interest in his welfare and his family – making him a promise (covenant) on which we base our hope in Jesus, the Messiah.
But for all his fame and military prowess, David was not the one to build God’s House – it was for his Son, Solomon to do that.
As we journey through this series, we will see David wait patiently for all the Lord has promised him, to come to pass. We will see him fall spectacularly in his adultery with Bathsheba and we will see him struggle to keep his undisciplined family together as one of his sons tries to seize the kingdom from him.
He was a poet and musician, he knew the Lord and displayed great faith in God and his purposes, even when, to the human eye, all seemed lost.
Described as ‘Ruddy and handsome’ David has often been depicted in works of art, such as Michelangelo’s famous statue in Florence.
As we follow the life of this extraordinary man we will learn about the heart of our God and the hearts of those he calls to serve him. My hope is that this series will deepen our understanding of God’s call on each one of us and grow in us a sense of anticipation as God brings us a new leader, and we begin a new chapter in our life and ministry together.
