The Holy Spirit

"I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever." (John 14:16)

We say it every time we say the Creed. I believe in the Holy Spirit. Then we move on. Across this series we are going to slow down and stay there.

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, and Jesus called him the gift the Father has promised. He is God's special provision for the church. Once God dwelt among his people in a Temple, then in the person of his Son, and now he dwells within each believer.

We will follow him in three movements. His work FOR us, in creation and redemption, in the prophets and in the Scriptures we still open every week. His work IN us, in new birth, in the daily help of a Guide and Comforter, and in the slow growth of fruit that starts to look like Jesus. His work THROUGH us, in Pentecost and mission, and in the gifts he hands out to build his church.

It is one thing to know about the Spirit. It is another thing to know him. Come and meet the one who already lives in you.
